The U.S. Department of State announced a stringent policy to curb birth tourism, where foreign parents use tourist visas primarily to give birth in the U.S., securing citizenship for their child while potentially burdening American taxpayers with medical costs. Consular officers are now denying all such visa applications under U.S. immigration law, with violators risking ineligibility for future U.S. visas or travel. This move reinforces the Department’s commitment to protecting American taxpayers and communities by preventing abuse of the immigration system.
“It is unacceptable for foreign parents to use a U.S. tourist visa for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain citizenship for the child, which also could result in American taxpayers paying the medical care costs. This is known as birth tourism and U.S. consular officers deny all such visa applications under U.S. immigration law. Those who abuse our immigration system through birth tourism may be ineligible for future visas or travel to the United States. This is one more way the U.S. Department of State is serving and protecting American taxpayers and communities.“
